Eleanor Jane Sterling, director of the Hawai’i Institute of Marine Biology at the University of Hawai’i at
Mānoa and a long-standing member of the CEE community passed away on Saturday February 11, 2023.
A visionary leader at the American Museum of Natural History (AMNH), she was a guiding influence on
the Centre for Biodiversity and Conservation (CBC), the first affiliated CEE centre in the United States.
Her interdisciplinary work honouring the interconnectedness of people and place and centred on equity,
inclusion, and diversity, made extraordinary contributions to conservation. The environmental evidence
syntheses community morns the loss of this inspiring colleague, mentor, and friend. She will be deeply
missed.
